Captain Joel M. Feder Retires from Navy

Captain FederMost of us know him as Dr. Joel Feder, a busy physician in Overland Park, Kansas.  However, if you were in the Navy you would know him as Captain Feder, ESG-7, Det. 218, Senior Medical Officer (and you would salute him). 

On October 11, 2008 Captain Feder retired from the U.S. Navy with full honors.  Captain Feder received his undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Kansas in 1970 and his graduate medical degree from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences in 1975.

Captain Feder’s naval career began upon enlisting in the United States Naval Reserve in 1970, completing basic training at the Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois.  Upon acceptance to medical school, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the Medical Corps.  Upon completion of medical school, he underwent his postgraduate medical education at Naval Regional Medical Center, Philadelphia, PA.  He then spent 2 years as a General Medical Officer aboard USS JASON AR-8 and at NAS Miramar.  He became a drilling reservist in Kansas City in 1984.  His assignments have included:  Executive Officer NRNH Charleston, OIC NRFH 500 CBTZ 22, Commanding Officer NRNH Whidbey 0183, Senior Medical Officer NRNH Great Lakes 2213, Senior Medical Officer NRFH 500 CBTZ 23, Battalion Medical Officer NMCB 15, and since October 2004 as Senior Medical Officer NR Expeditionary Strike Group 7 Detachment 218.   

In the civilian sector, Dr. Feder is a Board Certified Family Practitioner in Overland Park, Ks.  He currently serves on the Executive Committee at Overland Park Regional Medical Center and as President of the Kansas Association of Osteopathic Medicine.  He also serves on the adjunct teaching faculty of the University of Kansas School of Medicine, Department of Family Practice, as well as being a clinical preceptor for the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences.  He is past-president of the Overland Park Regional Medical Center Medical Staff, the Medical Society of Johnson/Wyandotte Counties, and the Santa Fe Trails Chapter of the Naval Reserve Association. 

Captain Feder has been married for 37 years to Randi and has 2 married daughters, Danielle and John Weeks and Staci and Kris Baber.

His award include:  Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2 awards), Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal, Battle “E” Medal (2 awards), National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal.
