D.O. Spotlight - Joel Feder

Dr. Joel Feder testifies before Congress

On April 25, 2012 KAOM’s own Dr. Joel Feder of Leawood, Kansas testified on behalf of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) before the House Ways and Means Oversight Subcommittee at a hearing examining the impact of current limitations on the use of tax-advanataged accouts for the purchase of over the counter products.

Dr. Feder was testifying in support of legislation that would restore consumers’ ability to use flexible spending accounts (FSA), health savings accounts (HSA), and other tax-advantaged accounts for the purchase of OTC medications independent of a physicians’ prescription.

In most cases, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has determined that these products are safe for broad distribution and therefore do not require a physician’s prescription.

By requiring a patient to obtain a prescription from their physician in order to use tax-advantaged accounts, resources are pulled away from addressing more serious cases within a physician’s practice and consumers are presented with an unnecessary obstacle to maintaining their health and wellbeing.

Dr. Feder is a Past President of KAOM and current president of the Kansas ACOFP chapter.

He serves on a number of AOA and ACOFP committees.
